The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announces the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025, a prestigious opportunity for individuals aspiring to serve the nation in administrative and allied services. Through this examination, candidates can secure positions in India's top government services, such as IAS, IPS, IFS, and many more.
About the Civil Services Examination
The UPSC CSE is one of India's most competitive exams, designed to select candidates for vital administrative, police, foreign, and allied services. The examination is conducted in three stages:
•Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)
•Main Examination (Written)
•Personality Test/Interview
Successful candidates are ranked based on their combined performance in the Main Examination and Interview, and allotted services as per their rank and preferences.
Available Services and Vacancies:
Approximately 979 vacancies are to be filled, including 38 seats reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
The services include:
All India Services: Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS).
Central Services (Group A): Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Indian Defence Accounts Service, and others.
Group B Services: Delhi Andaman & Nicobar Police Service (DANIPS), Delhi Andaman & Nicobar Civil Service (DANICS), Pondicherry Civil Service, and more.
Note: Final vacancies may vary as per the Government of India's requirement.
Eligibility Criteria:
Nationality:
IAS, IPS, IFS: Must be a citizen of India.
For other services, citizens of India, Nepal, Bhutan, or certain other categories are eligible as specified in the notification.
Age Limit:
Minimum: 21 years (as of 1st August 2025).
Maximum: 32 years (Born between 2nd August 1993 and 1st August 2004).
Age Relaxation:
•SC/ST: 5 years
•OBC: 3 years
•PwBD: 10 years
•Other categories as per government rules.
Educational Qualification:
1. Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
2. Final-year students awaiting results can apply provisionally but must provide proof of qualification at later stages.
Number of Attempts:
General/EWS: 6 attempts
OBC: 9 attempts
SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (within the age limit).
PwBD: As per their respective category.
Examination Structure:
1. Preliminary Examination:
Purpose: Screening for Main Examination.
Papers:
•Paper I: General Studies (200 Marks)
•Paper II: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) – Qualifying (33% minimum, 200 Marks)
•Duration: 2 hours per paper.
•Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted for each wrong answer.
Marks in Paper I determine shortlisting for the Main Examination.
2. Main Examination:
Papers: Nine written papers (1750 marks)
Qualifying Papers:
•Paper A: Indian Language (300 Marks)
•Paper B: English (300 Marks)
Merit Papers:
Essay, General Studies (4 papers), and Optional Subject (2 papers).
Optional Subjects: Candidates can choose from a list of subjects such as History, Geography, Sociology, etc.
Duration: 3 hours per paper.
3. Interview/Personality Test:
Marks: 275
Purpose: Assess communication skills, personality, and suitability for public service.
Important Dates
•Notification Date: 22nd January 2025
•Start of Online Applications: 22nd January 2025
•Last Date to Apply: 11th February 2025 (till 6 PM)
•Correction Window: 12th – 18th February 2025
•Preliminary Exam Date: 25th May 2025
•Main Examination: Dates to be announced.
Application Process (How to Apply?)
1. One-Time Registration (OTR):
•All applicants must complete OTR on upsconline.gov.in.
•This is a one-time process for all UPSC exams.
2. Online Application:
•After OTR, fill out the online form, upload required documents, and pay the application fee.
•Candidates can modify certain details between 12th and 18th February 2025.
3. Documents Needed:
•Passport-sized photo and signature.
•ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.).
•Degree certificate or provisional proof of qualification.
Application Fee:
•General/OBC/EWS: ₹100
•SC/ST/PwBD/Women: Exempted
•Payment modes include Net Banking, Credit/Debit Cards, or SBI challan.
Key Instructions:
E-Admit Cards: Available online; no hard copy will be sent.
Exam Centers: Allocated on a first-apply-first-allot basis.
Negative Marking: Applicable in the Preliminary Exam.
Scribe Facility: Available for eligible PwBD candidates.
